The Dalton Dollies

“The toilets were a busy place at the end of the night”

The ‘Dalton Dollies’, formally Dalton Rural, is a collection of ladies between the ages of 56-83. The formed 20 years ago and continue to meet once a month (however some meet every week to practice Tai Chi). I met 4 of the ladies, Dorothy McIntyre, Evie Sturgeon, Mary Spence & Sheila Rogerson, to chat about their history in Dumfries. Our conversation covered the high street, where Evie used to own a café ‘The Tartan Grill’, famous for its triple decker sandwiches. Then, they shared their fondest memories of the Dumfries dances where they met their Saturday night ‘clicks’, or didn’t if they hid in the bathroom at the end of the night. Our conversation went from era to era with special mentions to the famous fashions like go-go boots and brothel creepers.
